Update: I’d like to thank Yonatan for giving me the full story on animals :
Actually, the sheep are supposed to be the workers. Dogs are used to represent the megalomaniac businessmen who are finished by being dragged down by ‘the weight they used to need to throw around’. Pigs refers to politicians and opinion leaders, with direct references to Mary Whitehouse, who at the time (1977), was making considerable efforts to censor Pink Floyd’s music, because of its political overtones. Those who do not fall into either of these two categories are sheep, who follow blindly, without any self-thought.
As always, all reader-input is welcome !
I am just fascinated by the Battersea Power Station. I was listening to my Animals-record (by Pink Floyd, you should know this album, If you don’t I suggest you buy it). Anway, as pigs on the wing part one kicked in I took another good look at the cover. I remember the first time I saw it when I discovered the record on my grandparents’ attic. It used to be my mother’s. I remember how it struck me the first time I saw it. I couldn’t really grasp the symbolism of it all before I did some research, if you hadn’t already derived it from the title … The pig that floats high above the factory stands for the capitalist pig that guards over the old coal-fired power plant which is a clear symbol of (heavy) industry. Being the 11-year old I was when I first saw this cover I of course just thought it made reference to the title of the album and since all the songs are about sheep, dogs, pigs … heck it made a whole lot of sense to me. But of course when you listen to the lyrics very closely you get more insight into the message that is behind these songs. I’m no damn expert in this, hell no, I’m 18 and pretty unexperienced in the capitalist world and all that … But in my opinion I think that the song dogs makes a reference to the workers perhaps, who are given the sack or, in the case of the dog, left behind. I could go deeper into this but I don’t think my thoughts on it would make much sense … but I’d like to get the discussion going though, for those who lived all of this and can place it in it’s own context and time, I would really like to hear your opinions on this, so feel free to comment.
Anyway this post was the consequence of one cover …
This one …
I was just reading my last post. It looks like some 5 year old kid hacked my account and started typing posts for me, but that’s not it, I just haven’t been inspired the last few weeks. I don’t know if it has something to do with the fact that mid-terms are in full swing, but I sure as hell don’t like it. Although when looking back at my even earlier posts, I think it is time to go up a level and add a new dimension to my blog … content. I don’t know why, but my first few posts really made sense. The more I had to obligate myself to post though, the lower the quality became.
By this week there should be a domain up for the blog (www.applefan.be) and you might consider this as the blog growing up from a collection of childish, worthless rants into a serious … I can’t find a word … but it sure as hell would have been really sophisticated if I could think of one. I’m not going to talk about politics or world hunger because enough people already do and I don’t have anything to add to that conversation. I’ll be thinking of subjects while cramming all these book with vocabulary and other crap into my cranium and will get back to you guys shortly. If you have any suggestions, which you know or don’t are always very welcome, you can leave them in the comments of this post.
Thanks for reading …
I already told you guys about the fact that my macbook went in for repair this week. Here is the follow-up. After studying today I hopped onto the train to Antwerp to go and pick up my beloved macbook. When the clerk came from the back with my macbook I was very pleased. Not only did they change the inside of the machine (the plastic cover) they also changed the top outer cover because it had been stained by my protective sleeve. Needless to say I was very pleased with the result, certainly if you take into consideration the fact that they also gave me a brand new keyboard and touchpad … I couldn’t be more pleased. Of course I bought a new sleeve for my brand new macbook which won’t stain it and hopefully my macbook will be able to stay in this condition for some time. I know I will be taking even more care of it now that I got this second chance. Thank you very much to the technicians at the Switch store in Antwerp.
I don’t know if I already mentioned it or not, but my macbook had a little crack in the internal casing and some coloration too (yeah I know, early adopters… whatever). So because of that there was this big gap on my desk, therefore I moved the iMac in front of me. In this position the width of the screen is really accentuated, so I think I’ll be keepin git like this and I’m going to look out for one of those iCurve thingies. If you haven’t heard of those and care: it’s something that elevates your laptop and tilts it… google it if you want more info, I’m not in much of a blogging mood, but I just wanted to let you guys know I’m still alive. I might be recording something though, so maybe look out for that.
My dad gave me this sweet keyboard this evening. It’s made by cherry. I’m going to use so that I can elevate my macbook and use an external keyboard and mouse. That way I can keep my internal keyboard and touchpad a bit cleaner. Speaking abou the macbook, it’s going in for repair this week. There’s a little crack in the housing where my right wrist is. Here is a picture of the new set-up with elevated macbook and external cherry keyboard.
It’s not an iCurve … but it’ll do until I find a better solution. Just one last thing I would like to mention : today I added another youtube video. I posted a video of my macintosh classic II some time ago and because it had a fair amount of views I decided to make one about my powerbook 540c today. I’m not going to embed it into the post but you can watch it here.
That’s it for now really. Examinations are coming up, so posting will go down for a while.
